Astigmatism can accompany any form of refractive error and is very common. It results from a steepening of the cornea or natural lens, causing light to be focused unevenly, which is the main optical problem with this condition.

Symptoms

To individuals with uncorrected astigmatism, images may look blurry, stretched or shadowed.

Treatment

Astigmatism can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, corneal relaxing incisions, laser vision correction, such as LASIK, and special implant lenses.
